There are signs of a friendship, yes, but can we really say that they are friends? Once it's revealed that Jay and Daisy were involved and that Nick happens to be related to her...seems a little fishy. If he weren't related or even known to Daisy, the question is if Gatsby would have really chosen to meet him.
It seems as though he was obsessed with Daisy in the first place. We learn many facts later that one can conclude that...his whole identity was created to get Daisy back.
But the main question is still whether Nick is a friend to Jay. However, Jay shows Nick a side of him that no one else has really seen. He tells his real story, all to this person Nick. A counter argument is that Jay hadn't even know Nick that long, so if he was interested in a real open friendship with him, why so quickly tell Nick his real life story.
Another twist! Nick was so curious about Gatsby at first...perhaps Nick was using Gatsby to get information as well. About what kind of person this "Gatsby" was. Was he as intelligent as he claimed to be or is it all a clever ruse?! Who can say really. We all just have to actually READ and find out what their true intentions are. What their actions show and what they reveal about themselves.
